All students are expected to arrive at school in time for the daily Assembly at 8.50am.
Assembly:
Assembly takes place for the whole school each morning in the courtyard area. This is a time for the sharing of information; celebration of achievement and effort; presentation of awards and performances by individuals and groups. Parents and friends are welcome to attend our assemblies.
Early Leavers:
Students are not permitted to leave the school on their own during the day. AN EARLY LEAVERS' BOOK is located in the office. Before taking a student home early, this book must be signed. Only authorised people are to pick up students.
Latecomers:
When students arrive late for school they are required to sign the LATECOMERS' book, stating the time of arrival and the reason for lateness.
Early Dismissal:
On the last day of Terms 1, 2 and 3, students are dismissed from school at 2.30pm. On the last day of the school year students are dismissed at 1.30pm.
Access to Students:
Departmental guidelines clearly state that at no time is it permissible for parents to directly approach students to discuss incidents which have occurred in school time. Concerns must be taken to the class teacher and / or the Principal and appropriate action will be taken. More details of action can be found in our booklet, “Co-operating at Preston South Primary School ”.
Parents / guardians need to clearly indicate to the school who is authorized to pick up their children. Any changes need to be communicated as soon as possible.
Days of Extreme Temperature :
Our school is fortunate to have adequate heating and cooling equipment. Therefore there is little need to change attendance times. However parents may collect their children at any time during days of extreme temperature, following the procedures of Early Leavers.
Absences:
Departmental regulations require notification of students' absences.
Written notes are filed by the class teacher and the reason for the absence is entered on the attendance roll. If a student is going to be absent for a longer period of time, work can be given to be done whilst he/she is away from school
Playground Supervision:
Before school and after school supervision is available. Before school supervision begins at 8.40am.
After school supervision begins at 3.30 and ends at 3.40pm.
Two staff members supervise students at each recess time. One person oversees park activities and the other monitors behaviour within the school playground. Any superficial injuries are attended to by the duty teacher. If further assistance is required, the child goes into the First Aid Centre to be attended to by First Aid qualified personnel.
Students are encouraged to play in a positive, co-operative manner with older students considering the needs of the younger students.
School Crossings:
Our students use two major supervised school crossings and one which is unsupervised. Students are expected to follow the supervisors' instructions
at all times at the Bell Street and Hotham Street crossings. Families need to train their children to use the Raglan Street crossing correctly as it is unsupervised.
Out of School Hours Care:
Our After School Care Program operates daily from 3.30 pm. – 6.00 p.m. in the Hall. This program offers a safe, caring and stimulating environment for children. Afternoon tea is provided and a variety of activities are planned which cater for the needs of all age groups. A registration form must be completed before children begin attendance. An information sheet and the registration form may be obtained at the School Office.
